|
![]() |
Based loosely on Byron's poem, this lavish production with music from Adolphe Adam and Leo Delibes, is almost ballet's answer to Pirates of the Caribbean. It has been a Bolshoi favourite since 2007, when Alexi Ratmansky restored and refined the choreography. Medora, a young slave girl, has been sold to an evil pasha. She is then kidnapped from the pasha's palace by Conrad, a swashbuckling pirate chief. The ballet contains some magnificent set pieces from moonlight over the Mediterranean to Force 10 thunder and lightning and the shipwreck. A dazzling jewel in the Bolshoi's crown! ![]() |
2012 sees some exciting new initiatives including an expanded Kids Kitchen, more in the Festival's Cookschool held at The Kings Hotel and a great addition for the second weekend of the Festival with The Great Christchurch Bake Day and Fete. 2012 also sees the return of the wonderful James Martin of Saturday Morning Kitchen fame. Now seen as one of the best Food Festivals in the UK, it has attracted a number of celebrity chefs over the years including Anton Edelman, James Martin, Gary Rhodes, Jean-Christophe Novelli, Paul Rankin, Brian Turner and Nick Nairn, to name just a few. Well-known TV chef, Lesley Waters, is a regular at the event and has now become the patron of the Festival. The celebrity chefs and many local chefs do cookery demonstrations during the first weekend of the Festival. The demonstrations are housed in a marquee, including a professional Aga Rangemaster kitchen, which usually stands in Saxon Square in the centre of Christchurch. However, for 2012 the marquee is moving to a car park at the back of The Regent Centre due to building work taking place in Saxon Square. All of the demonstrations are free of charge. An international food market also takes place over the first weekend. This is again a free event with live entertainment which has developed into a huge and popular attraction drawing thousands of people to a colourful and bustling town centre. The number of stalls in the market, which takes place in a pedestrianised High Street, has grown to more than 100 selling a wide variety of food and drink. Education has become an important part of the Festival. Each year a Kids’ Kitchen is held during the weekend of the International Food Market to enable children to find out more about different sorts of food and to encourage healthy eating. | Bourne Free Bournemouth Pride Festival - Bournemouth - 14-07-2012 to 15-07-2012 |
|
![]() |
Bourne Free is Bournemouth’s LGBT Pride Festival. It is an annual celebration of all diversities that live in Bournemouth and the constant strive towards universal equality for all through entertainment and awareness. Why did Bourne Free start? Bourne Free was originally set up in 2004 when a far right organisation was due to come to Bournemouth and preach that homosexuality was wrong. Many prominent figures and active members of the gay communities in the area came together to organise an event in the Lower Gardens to protect the gay communities from the bigots and keep them together for a day of celebration, rather than of hostility. The event included entertainers performing at The Bandstand to support diversity, a balloon release with a 2 minute silence for victims of hate crime and Bournemouth’s first Gay Pride march. By the end of the day those that had come together just a few weeks before the preachers came to Bournemouth, the Bourne Free Committee, felt that they could have done even more if they had more time. It was decided that the committee would get back together and repeat the event every year, but as an official charity with designated roles. Bourne Free would become an annual celebration in the heart of Bournemouth for everyone to see the diversities in the community and to enjoy a variety of entertainment. In 2006, the title of the event was changed to the Bourne Free Pride Festival. |
